Sam Harris on the Reality of Islam

The Reality of Islam

In this short essay/letter, Sam Harris begins with the recent violence and outcries over the cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad. Hostages, protests, embassy burnings and more resulted in a cartoon published by a Danish newspaper.

Harris argues that Islam is not a religion of peace of which it is claiming to be (minus the fraction of extremists). The major point being that the majority of Muslims do not condone the actions of the extreme.

This of course could be interpreted in two ways. The first is that the majority of muslims also feel this way, but choose to let the extremists take the blame and do the dirty work. The other explanation is that they could be afraid of the violent minority.

Regardless of the reasons, extreme/violent sects of Islam are taking over Arab governments.
